Maximizing Google Adsense revenue is a desire many of us have, especially niche site owners seeking pursuit of passive income online.

Of the many ways a niche site can be monetized, Google Adsense is one of the most common, popular and turn-key ways to start profiting from your site, and thus maximizing your Google Adsense revenue can be an initiative well worth pursuing.

Google Adsense exists because of Google Adwords (a platform through which businesses advertise online), and in order to maximize profits from Adsense, we need to target niches, or industries that spend the most money in online advertising through Google Adwords.

So which are the best industries to target that can maximize your Google Adsense revenue? The answer is provided by Google itself, which eliminates all the guessing work.  Thus in order to maximize profits, you just have to go where the money already is.

Google’s 2011 Advertising Revenues

Google is a publicly traded company, and like any public company it is required to disclose its business’ details quarterly and then annually in its 10K Securities and Exchange Commission report (SEC filing).  Here is how Google’s revenues are broken down for year 2011.

Total Revenues:  $37.9 Billion (wow)

Of this total, 96% came from advertising, Google’s main revenue channel. Advertising is further separated by channels, such as Google Adwords ads on websites, mobile devices, YouTube hosted content and other similar avenues.

Generally however, we can treat these as one big advertising bucket as most vendors typically want to be “everywhere” in pursuit of their customers.

Google Adwords Spend by Industry

Let’s have a look at a further breakdown of the $37.9 Billion dollars in Google’s 2011 revenues.  Here are the top 10 industries that spent the most money on Google Ads

  • Finance & Insurance – $4B
  • Retail & General Merchandise – $2.8B
  • Travel & Tourism – $2.4B
  • Jobs & Education – $2.2B
  • Home & Garden – $2.1B
  • Computers & Consumer Electronics – $2B
  • Automotive – $2B
  • Internet & Telecom – $1.7B
  • Business & Industrial – $1.6B
  • Gifts & Occasions – 1.2B
  • Various Others – $15.9B
  • TOTAL  $37.9B

Within Finance and Insurance you have industries like banking, insurance companies which are then further segregated into specialties like life, health, auto, company, directors and officers insurance, etc. Then you have mortgages and other ancillary financial products and services.  Then you have commercial banking and consumer banking.

Each of these “categories” is quite broad in its own respect, with several players (companies) large and small participating in each.  For example, in Finance the top 4 players are:

  • State Farm Insurance – Approximately $43M in online advertising spend
  • Progressive Insurance – Approximately $42M in online advertising spend
  • GEICO – Approximately $23M in online advertising spend
  • Quicken Loans – Approximately $21M in online advertising spend

In Retail you have Amazon with approximately $55M in annual online ad spend.

In Travel you have Marriott Hotels spending $21M annually on online advertisement.

In Consumer Electronics, some of the larger players include Dell Computers, Best Buy, Apple and Microsoft (no surprise there).

What are then some of the higher paying keywords to target in the Consumer Electronics niche? Let’s look at some examples:

  • Online Video Conferencing Software – $35 Per Click
  • Ink Cartridges Discount – $26 Per Click
  • Email Marketing Software  – $22 Per Click (there you go, start writing about Aweber)
  • PC Memory  – $13 Per Click
  • Anti Virus Programs – $11 Per Click

How to Maximize Your Google Adsense Revenue?

It appears that all the data is available to us, eliminating all the guess work involved. If you want to profit from Google Adsense, follow where the dollars are going.  Within each of these categories, there are several sub categories that you can further explore.

But be careful before chasing the dollars without adequate keyword research.  Use keyword research tools such as Market Samurai to identify the specific keywords within each sub category and sub categories that are prudent to pursue.  You don’t want to end up chasing keywords that are already being chased by a bunch of others. Deliberately attempting to maximize Google Adsense Revenue involves careful and thorough keyword research.

Although I recommend niche sites best for generating Google Adsense revenue, you don’t have to start one.  There are other revenue sharing platforms online like HubPages and Squidoo where you can target profitable keywords and submit search engine optimized articles to each of these platforms.

However, understand that you will have to split the Google Adsense revenue three ways, between Google, the third party platform and then yourself. Also understand that the content YOU create and host on SOMEONE ELSE’S website is mostly benefiting them. Why not create a niche site of your own? It’s not that difficult.

I don’t know how you feel about this “insider information” based on your experience, but I am not surprised by these results. I have a handful of niche websites in finance related topics where each click sells for $80 or more. As a publisher I am parted 60% of the revenue.  There are many other similar niches with payouts north of $100 per click.  Outside of Finance, I have seen similar payouts in some legal and healthcare related niches.

Readers: Is this information insightful? Is it helpful? How do you feel after taking an inside look into Google’s earnings? Are you surprised? What niche are you in and where are you personally finding profitability?  What are you doing to maximize your Google Adsense revenue? Does this information influence the niche you will be getting into next?

  1. Adsense is one of the most efficient tool that I use in my business because it is very efficient.

  2. Justin C. says:

Amazing information Sunil. thank you! I did not know you were a CPA. That is good to know that I can trust your numbers 🙂 I am researching my website’s topic at the moment. I am looking forward to developing my first niche site using all your valuable guidance on the blog and in your amazing ebook.

I really appreciate all the help your blog has provided.

  3. wow… I’m glad to build an online empire in the financial world… awesome info Sunil!

I think that jobs & training are definitely a great niche too (since people are ready to take action if they are looking for a job 😉 ).

    • Sunil says:

You are indeed. What are the payouts like in the most lucrative finance niche you are in? I have seen them as high as $120/per click

      • $120 for a click! OMG!

        I never got those 🙁

I usually get about $1 a click on average but I’ve seen clicks in the $10-$15 (credit card or investment related). My guess would be that insurance is the most lucrative financial topic, what do you think?

  4. Gaven says:

I have been following your niche sites for several weeks and have been thinking about starting one of my own. I work in public services and my niche does not appear to be profitable. I am glad you provided this information. It is very helpful. Thank you

  5. Thanks for addressing this topic. I want to look at how to improve the Adsense revenue I earn every day.

  6. Princess P says:

Wow! I’ve never seen those payouts before. It makes me think I should do nothing but write about insurance.

  7. I am seeing higher payouts for my top bar but never north of 3 bucks a click. I may need to start a niche site that is very niche. The only problem with that is the time it will take to write the quality content required.

    • Sunil says:

tell me more about your top bar. is it a plugin? $3 per click is pretty good I’d say. as far as more niche sites, they do take time, but once established you could be reaping passive income for a while

  8. $100 per click? Good god…

  9. Akil says:

    Hi Sunil

Great piece I have my hand in a few site but not getting the click probably becuz i need to working on my structure and content. I like finance industry myself and legal as well as travel insurance. I once saw a cpc of 400 i think cant remember but there wasn’t enough traffic to build a site about. Still working on earning from adsense.
    Akil

  10. dele says:

how do i set the niche site

    • Sunil says:

welcome Dele. download my free report and it will walk you through the entire process step by step. I’ve also written somewhat about it and will continue to until I cap off the entire process. I want to link all the articles into a series once done.

  11. Sunil, could you reveal any one keyword in the finance or healthcare niche that gets $100 per click?
    That would be awesome 🙂

  12. Savvy Scot says:

This is awesome. Thanks for the share!

  13. I seem to average about $3-$5/click, but I only average a click every other month.

  14. Excellent post! Thanks for sharing the details. I think that many people struggle with doing keyword research effectively and their niche sites may not make the money that they were hoping for.

    • Sunil says:

so is there need for a comprehensive tutorial on how to effectively conduct keyword research? where do you think folks are going wrong? what are they specifically struggling with?

  15. Good post, Google Adsense is very good method for money earning. I have put Google ads in my website. The revenue will be based on the website traffic. Based on the website content traffic will increase.

  16. Bryan says:

At my site, my clicks tend to be worth about $2. However, I only get a handful of clicks a month. Still, as I continue to add content, I notice that I’m getting more and more traffic from google searches, which I think is key in getting more clicks.

  17. Vikram says:

Thank u Sunil Very Useful Finding niche blog …

  18. andra says:

    wow… congratulations, i want learn here…
    regard…am a student at a university…

  19. Steven says:

Based on mow much Amazon and Marriott Hotels ads I have seen that are completely irrelevant to my searches I was thinking that they are spending even more on Adwords.
Still these numbers are mind blowing and it would be nice to grab at least 0.01% of all this 🙂

  20. Daisy says:

What a surprise! In the top 10 industries I was expecting Health & Medical. There are a lot people out there saying that you get decent cpc from ads related to diets, plastic surgery etc. but this not even in there. Not surprised to see Finance & Insurance up there though.

  21. mike says:

great analysis. automotives has always been my biggest winner when it comes to adsense.

    • Sunil says:

have you openly disclosed any of your niche sites Mike? what are some of the marketing strategies that have helped you profit from this online business model?

  22. KSINGH says:

Adsense is great however it is better to be realistic and allow at least 2 to 3 years of hard work if you are serious about generating revenue. I have been blogging for 3 years now but my Adsense income is still not sufficient enough to write about/

    • Sunil says:

in my experience adsense doesn’t fair too well with authority type blogs. do you have other web properties that you have or can try adsense on? it does take time agree, and the amount of time depends really on the niche you decide to participate in and its relative competition.

  23. Abyooda says:

you can also use google trends to know what will be happening in a while and chase it 🙂

  24. Thanks for this post, I’m turning my attention back to Google adsense these days.

  25. Ben says:

Mind-blowing, and some people still think there is no money to be made in online advertising!!!

  26. korede says:

thanks for this post i wil work on it.

  27. Hello,
I’m totally agree with you, because till now my best revenues comes from adsense and not affiliation or selling links.
Adsense is the best way to get some extra money.
But i’m always under 400$ per month. how can i increase my revenue ?

  28. JJ Wong says:

Awesome! I’m on planning to build an information based website related about Banking. Wish me luck on profiting nice bucks from Google.

My Current Quotes website had finally reach 3 Figures income! =D

  29. Tom says:

    Hi,

My investment site gets very low engagement, click throughs and pages per visit.

Have you seen similar patterns with your financial websites?

I have tried numerous designs, headlines and content so I am fairly convinced it is the market itself that is different from the other niche markets I am in.

    • Sunil says:

I disagree Tom. it depends on the material you have. for example, how to material on investing (stock picks, fundamental analysis behind it, etc) draws some of the highest “sticky rates”. on the other hand, an informational site on CDs may not be as sticky as folks are likely looking for a list with interest rates to quickly click onto one and get their CD. but to answer you, because I have several, each’s performance differs from the other with no such trends as you mention

  30. Mackenzie says:

Pretty! This was an extremely wonderful post. Thanks for
    providing these details.
